How It Works

Longitudinal acoustic waves propagate through fluid media via alternating spatial regions of compression and rarefaction. Individual fluid particles oscillate back and forth about their resting positions parallel to the wave propagation vector, transferring mechanical momentum through elastic molecular collisions. The acoustic pressure perturbation satisfies the one-dimensional acoustic wave equation, where the propagation velocity depends directly on the medium's adiabatic bulk modulus.
