How It Works

A Helmholtz resonator functions as an acoustic lumped-element oscillator comprising an open neck connected to an expansive closed cavity. The slug of air residing in the neck vibrates as a lumped acoustic mass (inertance), while the enclosed air inside the cavity compresses and expands elastically as an acoustic compliance (capacitance). Resonance occurs when the kinetic energy of the vibrating neck fluid balances the potential energy of cavity compression.
