How It Works

Escape velocity is the minimum initial ballistic speed required for a projectile to break free from the gravitational pull of a central mass without continuous propulsion. When the kinetic energy exactly balances the negative gravitational potential energy (total mechanical energy E = 0), the resulting ballistic flight path is an open parabolic trajectory leading to an infinite separation distance with zero terminal velocity.
