How It Works

The aerodynamic drag polar quantifies the relationship between total aircraft drag coefficient (C_D) and lift coefficient (C_L). Total drag comprises constant zero-lift parasite drag (C_D0) arising from form and skin friction drag, plus lift-induced drag (C_Di) caused by wingtip vortex downwash. The tangent drawn from the origin to the parabolic polar curve marks the maximum lift-to-drag ratio (L/D)_max, defining optimal cruise range and aerodynamic efficiency.
