A reaction wheel is an internal momentum-exchange actuator used to control satellite attitude orientation without expending thruster propellant. When an internal electric motor torques the flywheel to accelerate its rotational speed, Newton's Third Law and the conservation of total system angular momentum generate an equal and opposite reactionary torque on the satellite bus. Continuous wheel momentum management maintains high-precision telescope and antenna pointing.
