How It Works

In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), hydrogen proton nuclear spins align with a strong static external magnetic field (B₀). Due to intrinsic spin angular momentum and magnetic dipole moments, the net macroscopic magnetization vector (M) precesses around the B₀ axis at the characteristic Larmor frequency. Radiofrequency excitation pulses tip magnetization into the transverse plane for diagnostic signal detection.
