Pitting corrosion is an insidious form of extremely localized attack that produces deep cavities within passive metallic alloys. Localized chemical breakdown of the protective oxide film exposes bare metal, setting up an autocatalytic electrochemical cell where metal dissolution at the bottom of the occluded pit draws aggressive chloride ions inward, causing localized acidification and accelerated penetration.
