Heterogeneous catalysis accelerates chemical transformations via distinct surface reaction steps at the interface between solid catalyst and fluid phases. Reactant molecules diffuse from the bulk fluid and chemisorb onto active solid catalyst surface sites. Weakened intramolecular bonds facilitate surface rearrangement and product formation at lower activation energies, after which the completed product desorbs back into the bulk phase to regenerate free active sites.
