Terzaghi's classical consolidation theory describes the time-dependent volumetric settlement of saturated fine-grained soils under sustained compressive load. The applied overburden initially creates excess pore water pressure throughout the soil layer. As pore fluid gradually drains through permeable boundary layers, the effective stress increases proportionally, transferring load to the mineral soil skeleton.
