How It Works

Viscous fluid flow in closed conduits experiences frictional energy dissipation caused by internal shear stress and wall roughness resistance. The Darcy-Weisbach equation determines the continuous head loss along the conduit as a function of the pipe diameter, length, velocity head, and the friction factor f from the Moody chart. Velocity profiles transition from parabolic in laminar flow to blunt logarithmic shapes in turbulent flow.
