How It Works

Strut-and-tie modeling applies lower-bound plasticity theory to analyze discontinuity regions (D-regions) in reinforced concrete members where plane sections do not remain plane. The complex internal stress field is idealized as a pin-jointed truss comprising compressive concrete stress fields (struts), tensile steel reinforcement chords (ties), and connecting nodal zones in static equilibrium.
