Von Mises Yield Criterion

Civil Engineering

How It Works

The von Mises yield criterion postulates that ductile yielding in structural metals initiates when the second invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor J₂ reaches a critical value. In 3D principal stress space, the yield condition forms an open circular cylinder centered along the hydrostatic line σ₁ = σ₂ = σ₃. Elastic states remain inside the cylinder, while plastic flow occurs along the surface normal.

Governing Equation
(σ₁ - σ₂)² + (σ₂ - σ₃)² + (σ₃ - σ₁)² = 2 · σ_y²  |  J₂ = k²
