How It Works

Unreinforced masonry arches maintain structural stability exclusively through compressive contact forces transferred between voussoirs. Under Hooke's funicular principle, an arch remains completely stable if the internal line of thrust remains enclosed within the middle third of the arch ring thickness. Confining thrust within this middle third kern prevents joint tensile cracking.
