How It Works

Negative feedback is a foundational principle of control theory and analog circuit design in which a portion of the system's output is inverted and subtracted from the input command signal. Although negative feedback reduces overall closed-loop gain, it confers tremendous operational advantages: desensitizing the system to open-loop parameter variations, suppressing non-linear distortion, extending operating bandwidth, and stabilizing internal dynamics against environmental disturbances.
