How It Works

High-head hydroelectric power plants employ Pelton impulse turbines where high-velocity water jets from stationary nozzles strike double-cupped split runner buckets. The central splitter ridge divides the water jet symmetrically, turning the stream through nearly 180° to maximize momentum transfer to the rotating wheel. Maximum mechanical power output is achieved when the tangential bucket peripheral velocity equals half the jet velocity.
