Geothermal Ground Source Heat Pump

Energy Engineering

How It Works

Ground source geothermal heat pumps harness the near-constant thermal temperature of the shallow subsurface for building space conditioning. Circulating closed-loop heat transfer fluids through vertical borehole U-tubes facilitates vapor-compression refrigeration cycles with elevated coefficients of performance (COP) compared to air-source systems, moving thermal energy between ground isotherms and indoor heat exchangers.

Governing Equation
COP_heating = Q_H / W_in = T_H / (T_H - T_C)  |  q = (T_ground - T_fluid) / R_borehole
