How It Works

Secondary lithium-ion electrochemical cells store and release electrical energy through reversible topotactic intercalation of lithium ions into host crystal lattice structures. During discharging, lithium ions de-intercalate from the graphitic anode lattice, diffuse across the liquid electrolyte, and insert into the transition metal oxide cathode, while balancing electrons flow through the external electrical load circuit.
