Flywheel Kinetic Energy Storage Rotor

Energy Engineering

How It Works

Flywheel energy storage systems store electrical energy as mechanical kinetic energy within high-speed rotating composite or alloy rotors supported by active magnetic levitation bearings in a vacuum chamber. The maximum kinetic energy density is constrained by the ultimate tensile hoop stress developed along the outer rotor rim due to centrifugal body forces.
