How It Works

Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) store charge electrostatically without faradaic redox reactions across high-surface-area nanoporous carbon electrodes. Applying a potential difference forms a nanometer-scale Helmholtz charge separation layer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. The ultra-small dielectric separation distance and massive specific surface area yield immense capacitance and rapid charge-discharge kinetics.
