How It Works

Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) provides utility-scale bulk electrical energy storage by using off-peak electricity to drive multi-stage compressors, injecting dense air into deep underground salt caverns or porous aquifers. During peak demand periods, the high-pressure compressed air expands through recuperators and gas expanders to drive turbine-generators under polytropic thermodynamic work cycles.
