Monod Biofilm Microbial Kinetics

Environmental Engineering

How It Works

Activated sludge and fixed-film biological treatment processes utilize microbial consortia to consume dissolved organic carbon (BOD). Microbial specific growth rate obeys Monod saturation kinetics, exhibiting first-order substrate limitation at low concentrations and zero-order plateau behavior at high concentrations. Simultaneous diffusion and biochemical consumption establish steep substrate gradients within the active biofilm.
