Planetary Greenhouse Radiative Forcing

Environmental Engineering

How It Works

Planetary surface equilibrium is governed by the conservation of radiant energy between incoming solar shortwave flux and outgoing terrestrial longwave infrared emission. While the atmosphere is largely transparent to incident solar radiation, polyatomic greenhouse gas molecules selectively absorb and re-emit longwave terrestrial radiation isotropically in vibrational-rotational spectral bands.
