How It Works

Highway noise walls attenuate sound propagation toward sensitive receptors primarily by blocking direct line-of-sight and forcing sound waves to diffract over the barrier top edge. Kurze-Anderson and Maekawa diffraction formulas relate acoustic insertion loss to the dimensionless Fresnel number N, which is proportional to the acoustic path length difference divided by wavelength.
