Airy linear wave theory describes surface gravity waves propagating across ocean water. While the wave waveform propagates horizontally with phase velocity c, individual water parcel particles do not translate with the wave; instead, they trace closed circular orbital trajectories in deep water (or flattened ellipses in shallow water). The orbital radius decays exponentially with depth (z), approaching negligible particle motion below a water depth of half a wavelength.
