How It Works

Large-scale planetary ocean currents are governed by geostrophic balance, an equilibrium state where the horizontal pressure gradient force produced by sea surface slopes is exactly balanced by the apparent Coriolis deflection force arising from Earth's rotation. In the Northern Hemisphere, Coriolis acceleration deflects moving seawater parcels to the right, driving persistent clockwise ocean gyres around subtropical oceanic highs.
