How It Works

Polycrystalline engineering materials comprise an aggregate of microscopic crystalline grains with differing spatial lattice orientations. Grain boundaries are planar interfaces where crystallographic orientations abruptly change, creating localized atomic mismatch. Because dislocations cannot easily cross into adjacent misoriented grains, grain boundaries impede dislocation glide, strengthening the alloy according to the Hall-Petch relation.
