How It Works

Interstitial diffusion occurs when solute atoms with atomic radii significantly smaller than host solvent atoms (such as carbon or hydrogen in iron) migrate by jumping between vacant interstitial void sites within the host crystal lattice. Because interstitial atoms require lower activation energies than vacancy-mediated diffusion, interstitial mass transport proceeds orders of magnitude faster at equivalent temperatures.
