How It Works

A shell-and-tube heat exchanger achieves thermal energy exchange between two fluids at different temperatures without physical mixing. One fluid streams through an internal bundle of parallel conductive tubes, while the second fluid circulates around them inside the outer pressure shell directed by transverse baffles. Heat transfer is governed by the overall heat transfer coefficient (U) and logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD).
