How It Works

Euler buckling describes the catastrophic bifurcation of equilibrium in slender structural columns under compressive axial loading. While compressive stresses remain below the material yield strength, a critical compressive load (P_cr) causes the column to suddenly bow out transversely. For a pinned-pinned column, the fundamental deflection eigenmode is a half-sine wave governed by flexural rigidity (EI) and column length (L).
