Hydraulic Fracture Propagation Mechanics

Mining & Petroleum Engineering

How It Works

Hydraulic fracturing stimulates low-permeability hydrocarbon formations by injecting high-pressure fracturing fluid and granular proppant to induce tensile failure in rock. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) governs crack propagation, where crack opening displacement w(x) and length advance when the crack-tip stress intensity factor K_I exceeds the rock fracture toughness K_Ic.

Governing Equation
K_I = ΔP · √(π · a) ≥ K_Ic  |  w(x) = [4 · (1 - ν²) · ΔP / E] · √(a² - x²)
