How It Works

Rotary drilling advances boreholes through rock formations by applying axial weight on bit (WOB) and rotational torque via roller cones or PDC cutter teeth. The rate of penetration (ROP) is governed by mechanical specific energy and rock compressive strength, operating through gouging and compressive shear chipping. Drilling mud circulates continuously to remove cuttings and stabilize borehole pressure.
