How It Works

Froth flotation separates valuable hydrophobic mineral particles from hydrophilic gangue in aerated mineral pulps. Chemical collector surfactants selectively adsorb onto targeted sulfide or oxide minerals, increasing the contact angle θ governed by the Young-Dupré equation. Hydrophobic grains adhere to ascending air bubbles, forming an enriched surface froth layer while waste tailings sink.
