How It Works

Reactor control rods regulate core reactivity and fission reaction rates by inserting neutron-absorbing elements—such as boron, cadmium, or hafnium—into the fuel matrix. Capturing thermal neutrons prevents them from inducing subsequent fission events, adjusting the effective multiplication factor k_eff to maintain steady critical operation (k_eff = 1) or safely shut down the reactor.
