How It Works

Gamma and X-ray radiation beams traversing matter undergo exponential attenuation through photoelectric absorption, Compton scattering, and pair production. The beam intensity decreases with material thickness according to the Beer-Lambert attenuation law, where the Half-Value Layer (HVL) specifies the thickness required to reduce ionizing radiation flux by exactly 50%.
