How It Works

A cyclotron accelerates charged subatomic particles outward from a central ion source along an expanding spiral trajectory. A static perpendicular magnetic field bends particles into circular orbits, while a high-frequency alternating electric field across the gap between two semi-circular 'Dee' electrodes accelerates them on each half-turn with constant orbital frequency.
