How It Works

Nuclear fission is induced when a heavy fissile nucleus (²³⁵U) absorbs a thermal neutron, forming a compound nucleus in a highly excited vibrational state. As Coulomb electrostatic repulsion overcomes the short-range strong nuclear force, the oscillating nucleus elongates and splits into two lighter fission fragments, releasing two to three prompt neutrons and ~200 MeV of nuclear binding energy.
