How It Works

A nuclear chain reaction occurs when neutrons released during fission events induce subsequent fission in adjacent fissile nuclei. In a critical reactor system, exactly one neutron per fission event initiates another fission (k_eff = 1), sustaining a steady power output, whereas supercritical states (k_eff > 1) lead to exponential neutron multiplication.
