How It Works

Thermonuclear fusion combines light hydrogen isotopes—deuterium (²H) and tritium (³H)—at multi-million-kelvin plasma temperatures. When thermal kinetic energy overcomes Coulomb electrostatic repulsion, the strong nuclear force binds nucleons into a tightly bound helium-4 (alpha) nucleus and a high-energy 14.1 MeV neutron.
