Alpha decay is a radioactive decay mode in which an unstable heavy nucleus spontaneously emits an alpha particle (⁴He nucleus). Because the alpha particle's kinetic energy is significantly less than the Coulomb potential barrier height, emission is classically forbidden and occurs purely via quantum mechanical tunneling through the barrier, as formulated by George Gamow.
