How It Works

Gamma ray emission occurs when an excited metastable nuclear state transitions to a lower energy state or ground state via electromagnetic radiation. Because gamma de-excitation releases excess nuclear binding energy without changing atomic number (Z) or mass number (A), it yields monochromatic, highly penetrating gamma photons.
