How It Works

Neutron moderation slows fast fission neutrons (~2 MeV) to thermal equilibrium energies (~0.025 eV) through successive elastic kinematic collisions with light moderator nuclei (such as hydrogen, deuterium, or carbon). Reducing neutron kinetic energy dramatically increases the probability of capturing neutrons to induce subsequent fission in uranium-235.
