How It Works

Stimulated emission occurs when an incident photon perturbs an atom in an excited quantum state, stimulating an electron transition to a lower state with emission of a clone photon possessing identical wavelength, phase, direction, and polarization. In an optical resonator with population inversion, stimulated emission exceeds absorption, yielding coherent laser amplification.
