How It Works

Snell's law governs the refraction of light traversing the planar boundary between media of differing refractive indices. Conserving the tangential wavevector requires light entering an optically denser medium (n₂ > n₁) to bend toward the normal. When incident from a higher index medium beyond the critical angle (θ_c), refracted rays cease and total internal reflection (TIR) occurs.
