Step-Index Optical Waveguide Fiber

Optical Engineering

How It Works

A step-index optical fiber confines and guides optical signals within a cylindrical core surrounded by a lower-refractive-index cladding via total internal reflection. Light rays entering within the acceptance cone defined by the numerical aperture (NA) undergo low-loss zigzag reflections down the fiber length.

Governing Equation
NA = √(n_{core}^2 - n_{clad}^2) , V = (2π · a) / λ · NA
