Photonic Crystal Bandgap

Optical Engineering

How It Works

Photonic crystals feature spatially periodic dielectric variations whose lattice constant is on the order of the optical wavelength. Constructive multiple Bragg reflections prohibit electromagnetic wave propagation within specific forbidden frequency bands, forming a photonic bandgap (PBG) that confines light along designed defect channels.
