How It Works

Robotic impedance control regulates the dynamic relationship between contact interaction forces and manipulator kinematic deviation during physical contact with the environment. Rather than pursuing unconstrained position or pure force trajectory goals in isolation, the controller imposes a designated mechanical impedance model (a virtual mass-spring-damper) at the end-effector. This compliant interaction prevents destructive impact forces, facilitating safe physical human-robot collaboration and precision surface assembly.
