How It Works

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) multiplies the transmission capacity of optical telecommunication fiber by simultaneously routing multiple independent data channels across a single optical strand, with each channel operating at a discrete optical wavelength (color). Using diffraction gratings or arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), separate laser wavelengths are combined at the multiplexer, conveyed without mutual optical crosstalk, and separated at the demultiplexer.
